Jargon


  Some  of the computer slang of today can be confusing, below you will discover what some of the jargon means.

Animated Graphics - Graphics are animated such as a picture of a swimming fish, or an airplane flying.  Increasingly common to web sites.

Banner - A form of advertising (and providing a link) from one web site to another site.  For example, company A puts its banner on company B's web site.  Customers who click on the banner will then be taken to company A's web site.  Banners are placed on web sites through mutual agreements.

Browser - A  software tool used to view and navigate the Internet and view web pages.  The most common browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Explorer.

CGI (Common Gateway Interface) - A Script written or adapted by programmers that enables visitors to a web site to order products or fill out certain forms from their computer, and return that information to the web site manager in a matter of seconds, anywhere in the world.

Clip Art - In word processing and desktop publishing, illustrations that are stored on disk and can be  inserted into a document or web page.

Contact Us Page - A web page in a web site that includes a means for a customer to reach the web site manager.

Counter - Common component of most web sites which counts how many people have visited the page.  Allows a web site manager to measure access thus providing marketing statistics.  Comparable to circulation figures for a newspaper or magazine

Credit Card Orders - Method by which customers can use their credit card to place an order via a web site.

Custom Graphics - Unique pictures, logos, or images created by a designer for a specific purpose.

Database - An organized collection of information that can be searched, retrieved, changed, and sorted using a collection of programs known a a database management system, (ie Microsoft Access). 

Data Storage - Text and images contained in the web page are stored an a server  so that they can be downloaded to the user's computer for viewing.  Internet service providers charge a fee for storing such data, based on size, amount or quantity of data stored.

Digital Photo - A digital camera uses no film, but stores a photo in memory until it is transferred to a computer file.  Images are digitized to enable viewing on a computer monitor.

Domain Name  - The Name of an Internet server registered with Internic This is the main part of a web site's address. For instance. www.IBM.com

Download - To transfer a copy of programs or images from the Internet to a computer.

E-Mail Address - The address assigned to a recipient of "Electronic Mail."  The computer version of a mailing address.

Fiber Optic Cable - A method of transmitting data in the form of a laser light over bundles of glass fibers. This method has numerous advantages over such traditional techniques as wire cables, phone lines, and radio waves.  Fiber optics offers greater bandwidth and is virtually unsusceptible to electromagnetic interference.  It is also far more suited for use by computers, because  it can transmit digital data directly without the need to convert it into analogue form through s modem. The process of replacing older cable with smaller, lighter fiber optic cable is under way, and by the end of the century fiber optics should be a common method of communications in much of the world.

Forms - An interactive page on the web site that enables visitors to order products or fill out information from their computer, and return that information to the web site manager in a matter of seconds anywhere in the world.

Forms Database - A database of information gathered from the forms.

Framed Web Site - This web site allows your table of contents to appear on every page to the left or right or at the bottom in an unchanged column.  The changes a viewer clicks on in the table of Contents frame, changes the page in the main frame.

Graphics - Pictures, logos, or images used in desktop and internet publishing.  These are available from either commercial packages or custom designers.

Hits - Term used to describe the number of visitors to a web site.  Often shown as a total accumulative number on a web page counter.  For example if you have 10,000 hits on your web site then you have had 10,000 visitors to that site.

Home Page - The web site of the server, called "Home". Often used now to indicate the first page seen when logging on to a site.

Hook Up - A slang term for dial-up internet connection.

Hyper Text Mark-up Language - The programming language used to create web site documents by embedding linking instructions to a file.

Hyperlink - A link on a page that connects to other pages in the site or to other web sites.  A user clicks on a hyperlink and it takes them to another page or web site.  Links can be either graphics (see Image Map) or text (See Hypertext Mark-up Language).

Image Map - This form of technology takes a photo or an image, and then, separates it's individual images into clickable linked items. can type right into the form on your web site to interact with the web site owners or manager - called the webmaster.

Interactive -

Internet - A massive collection of computers networks connected through physical telephone cabling (soon to be fiber optic cable) to connect with a program or internet site.

InterNic - The company that is responsible for internet domain names.  InterNic manages domain names ensuring that no two sites have the same domain name.

JAVA - A programming language that allows programmers to create Applets.  Applets live on web pages allowing the web site to have interactive games, spreadsheets, animations and much more.  Java allows a web site to function similar to a computer thus expanding the capabilities of the internet.

JAVA Script - A mini-programming language that uses English commands.  Not as powerful as AVA, but a lot easier to use.

Logo Page - An Optional page in a web site that contains only the logo of the company or organization.  This is the first page a user goes to when they visit the site, similar to a front door.  The user clicks on the logo and enters the web site.

Main Page - The table of contents page for a web site.  Lists the contents of the site.

Navigational Buttons - These are buttons a viewer uses to navigate their way through a web site.

Non-Virtual Web Site - A web site that is placed on a server which uses that servers company name in your URL (address) Example: http://www.servername/yourname.com.  These non-virtual web sites servers usually do not charge for web space.

Page ( web site page) - One page on the web site can scroll down into infinity without ever clicking to another page.  However, this is not a one-page web site.  For pricing purposes, one page is equal to an 8 1/2 x 11 piece of paper.

Product Pages - A page on a company's web site where products and/or services are listed for customer viewing.

Search Engines - Software tools that search the Internet for specific web site based on a query, i.e. travel agencies.  Currently, there are 1000's of these available. Roughly equivalent to the Yellow Pages.

Secure Server Credit Cards - A theft resistant way for customers at a web site to order products or services directly from the clients web site.

Severe Space Rental - A computer hooked into the internet 24 hours every day.  These servers rent space by the year for storing text and images contained in a web page so that they can be downloaded to the user's computer for viewing anytime 24 hours every day all year.  internet service providers charge a fee for storing such data, based on size, amount or quantity of data stored.  These prices many fluctuate is the sever is allowed to advertise on your site.

URL - Universal Resources Locator.  A URL is the internet address of a web site.  The general form is http://www.yourcompany.com. This name is typed into the location or address area of a browser and downloads the web site to the user's computer screen.

Upload - Transferring files or programs from a computer to the server on the internet.

Virtual Web Site - A web site that uses only one domain name in the URL (address).  The server's name does not appear in the address.  Example: http://www.yourcompany

Web Site - A collection of internet web pages or data of a company or individual .  If the internet is the information superhighway then these are the houses and stores on the side of the road.  Web sites are are what people surfing the net visit.
